As you may know it’s the Year of the Pig, and this holiday is the equivalent of Christmas and New Year’s for Chinese people. Red is lucky, and it is everywhere. It’s so lucky peeps will buy new red underwear and socks just for the occasion. Red banners and signage are sold at all types of variety stores with phrasings and slogans for good health and fortune for the coming year. You might see fish, a symbol of keeping wealth and prosperity, or the word 福 (fok) which means “blessings”. These banners are hung everywhere from the main door to windows and walls, and some are even hand written by calligraphers.
