From some stunning visuals that blew up my Facebook news feed, I realized that SPITGAN friend, choreographer Sudhee Liao, had just released another piece of her work to the public. The visuals, as you see in this story by photographer Jesse Clockwork, peeked my curiosity as to what Version 2 of Hermetic Diode was about. What this Hong Kong festival, Sound Forms 2019 was about. SPITGAN digs the music here and were mighty hungry for some answers! Not only were we able to speak to Sudhee to give us some insights but the curator of Sound Forms 2019, Remy Siu, was kind enough to give us a rundown. How is ‘perform*ing*’ arts doing in Hong Kong? Well why not speak to those living and breathing it.

SPITGAN : Tell us about Hermetic Diode V2? The title sounds heady.
SUDHEE LIAO : Hermetic Diode is a collaborative effort between Sudhee Liao and Andrew Luk, exploring notions regarding the performed space. In doing so, the piece plays with elements of proximity and intimacy between performers and audience.

SG : Was there a version 1?
SL : Yes. The version 1 was shown in Hong Kong Arts Festival 2018 as part of Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series.

SG : What is the difference between the 2? Will there be more? A series?
SL : Hermetic Diode V2 was performed in Sound Forms 2019 – A Festival of Multichannel. I worked closely with my sound designer, Fung Chin Lung to create a multi channel sound installation within the space. The amplified sound added an underlying layer to the piece and I really liked how multichannel work can expand a whole new dimension and possibilities of the work within the space.

新多倫多 音樂‧籃球‧城市/BUN DEM. TRACK BREAKDOWN, THE RAPTORS AND THE 6 GUIDE

Bun Dem – Lord Juco ft. Falcon Outlaw (prod. by Ol Man 80zz)
https://lordjuco.bandcamp.com/track/bun-dem-ft-falcon-outlaw

Interview : Nick D

We caught this track on the strength of FalconCrest being involved in the mix. Lord Juco’s name had a familiar ring already, having featured on Chong Wizard’s, The Power Stone EP. Ol’ Man 80zz? I swore Jordan C. had his production in a Top10EN, but it must have been his clever flip on the Zig Zag logo that got stuck in the mind! I digress.

To the matter at hand though, Lord Juco’s, ‘Bun Dem’ is a track that exemplifies a stylistic sound of Toronto. That Hip Hop inflected with a strong Caribbean/West Indies vibe. This banga is straight head nod with a minimal beat of 80% slap your skull up drums, and some sinister keys. Lord Juco sets it off callin’ an end to the fxckery he sees, ‘you hide like Anne Frank… put you in a hole like Hussein’. Big Falcon Outlaw fills throughout with his patois chant, and closes with a second verse reinforcin’ why you don’t bring it ’round here. This is some straight 90’s Smif N Wessun ish (Not a Toronto group lol)!

Since all heads were from the Toronto area. We figured why not get all hands on deck to share some insight on the track for ya’ll. Chop it up about some basketball since the Raptors are in the playoff hunt with some real possibilities, and just share a few down to earth recommendations about the city for you readers. Things like some spots to hit on a night out, and where to grab a hearty plate! A Hip Hop guide to Toronto, truly!

SPITGAN : So you big basketball fans?
Lord Juco : Haven’t followed Ball in a long time, I catcha one two raptors games here and there, but can’t say I’m a fan.
Ol Man 80zz : Huge fan of Ball. I get legit hurt when the season ends lol. My obsession wit ball has got to the point where I get in bad moods if my squad loses.
Falcon Outlaw : I’m a big Raptors fan!

SG : Who’s your favorite player?
FO : Kawhi Leonard.
LJ : Tracy McGrady then, probably Kevin Durant now.
OM8 : I’ma definitely go wit Jordan on this one, but if we talkin’ Raptors then I’d say VC, Demar & the boy Kawhi. I definitely fuxs wit Lowry as well.

SG : Who’s gonna win it all this year?
OM8 : That shxts easy!!!!!! We The North!!!! RAPTORS all day haha. I can’t front tho, the Bucks, Warriors & Rockets are nice wit it. I could see any of these squads makin’ it deep.
LJ : I’d like to see Houston.
FO : Come on mannnn! The RAPTORS!

MICHAEL KORS SHANGHAI EVENT

What I do remember about this event is it was an INSTAGRAM/social media heaven. Meaning everywhere you turned, the venue was made for maximum posting effect. Savvy. Oh, now memory returns. The first DJ was a popular fella but the second DJ was playin’ dem funk jams! Of course by that time most of the hip crowd had left. Shanghai party goers shut it down early. Correct me if I am wrong. The next level? They invited guests to be filmed like a live movie scene. Invited to do their own struts which were instantly broadcasted on a huge screen front and center at the venue. The set up came replete with a ‘director’ that yelled instructions at ya through a megaphone! Peoples were lined up for miles. Otherwise it was good to see some very important leaders of the golden era of the HK fashion industry. Keep that champagne comin!

A fashionable set of fashion editors I must say. Michael Kors no wear to be seen!

DOLCE & GABBANA BEIJING INSTAGRAM

So it came to our attention recently that Dolce & Gabbana’s Instagram had caused a furor. We were rather confused as D&G’s Insta is one of the best going for a fashion brand and in general nowadays! They are using their weight to do something truly inspiring. Travelling the world shooting their clothes and spreading images of positive smiles, and heaps of La Dolce Vita! Their use of real environments and the people that inhabit them are truly vital in this photoshop’ed and manufactured landscape. What was the cause of all the clamor you ask? Well they took this approach to Beijing and netizens in China went bananas over their choice of locations and people. D&G were criticized for showing the ‘ugly’ side of China. The only ugly side that came out of this was the ugly attitude that spilled all over the ‘net. For those that have never been to China. China looks like this. You will see these people, these places where ever you go. And look at these images! All subjects look happy to be in them! Genuine smiles and interaction all around! We were surprised to see that D&G still left the images on their Instagram as we had heard unsubstantiated information that they were forced to pull them from Weibo and Mainland social media accounts. Truly a sad day and a backwards step for China. If ya don’t want people to be shooting this then well don’t be having this. These are Chinese folk! No everyone ain’t a 10 and that’s alright! Get grown mofos! Salute to the Morelli Brothers who shot this set of images and Dolce & Gabbana for being a leader!
