BOLD NEW WORLD. CHINESE NEW YEAR 2019

Bold New World hosted by Hiu Wing, shares with you the local color and celebrations of Chinese New Year. As you may know it’s the Year of the Pig, and this holiday is the equivalent of Christmas and New Year’s for Chinese people. Red is lucky, and it is everywhere. It’s so lucky peeps will buy new red underwear and socks just for the occasion. Red banners and signage are sold at all types of variety stores with phrasings and slogans for good health and fortune for the coming year. You might see fish, a symbol of keeping wealth and prosperity, or the word 福 (fok) which means “blessings”. These banners are hung everywhere from the main door to windows and walls, and some are even hand written by calligraphers.

Phrasings such as, 豬事順利 (Ju See Sun Lei), everything will be successful for you, and 豬籠入水 (Ju Loung Yup Sui), “Pig cage will fill with water”, meaning your coffers will fill with money (water meaning money), are great greetings to use this year when you see close ones. Also 豬圓玉潤 (Ju Yuen Yuk Yun); you will eat well, like a pig, and your complexion will be glowing, is definitely something to say to women to impress them. So thanks us later when you get a fat red pocket, ‘lai see’!
