#ComeWithMe to a #BoldNewWorld. For our third adventure, host Hiu Wing, and SPITGAN Magazine would like to shine some light on the old district of Sham Shui Po. Home to many industries, we would like to spotlight its history as a fashion district, specifically a fabric sourcing area first. In these streets you will find everything you need for garment construction. It is such a grand story with so many characters, we want to focus on the, “欽州街小販市場 Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar“. This particular market has been around for 40+ years. It’s fabrics are mostly deadstock and run-offs from mills. Visually the exterior is protected from the elements by weather-worn tarps, but the interior is a chaotic labyrinth of fabrics stacked floor to ceiling. It’s claustrophobic and awe-inspiring at the same time. This is the equivalent to a record-digger finding a warehouse full of vinyl. It would take you days, even weeks to sort through this place.

This bazaar is also the work home of a small community of locals who are warm and helpful. People from all over the world find this place somehow. From fashion insiders and manufacturers, to international tourists and the curious, many people have passed through it’s narrow aisles, marveling at the scope of the market. As you can see from our photoshoot, both young and old come to visit, and to seek professional assistance from the sewers and tailors.

“So much of Hong Kong’s heritage is disappearing. To visit these unique spaces where locals have a story to tell and pass on their experiences and insights to the next generation; this environment is invaluable. Not only is the space great for photographs, it also is a functional resource for an industry that is truly Hong Kong’s, garment manufacturing. The people here, despite their uncertainty are always joyful and welcoming. A must-visit and a true value-added space to Hong Kong’s diverse landscape.” – Hiu Wing

As of now the fate of the fabric bazaar is uncertain. The Hong Kong government wants to relocate it, and in its place build a commercial space. The vendors have petitioned against this. Know of their plight and support this heritage site by following their Facebook page :
