SHEA BUTTER BABY. ARI LENNOX

Review by : Christina Rateau @blue_spiritu

Ari Lennox has been my vibe lately and homegirl just dropped her debut album “Shea Butter Baby” [FINALLY]. J. Cole’s protege gives us real, soulful vibes and anecdotes at the end of every song (please don’t skip them). My favorite anecdote (from the song ‘New Apartment’) goes something like: “Your furniture is not gonna fucking teach you how to dougie, It’s not gonna teach you how to swim, it’s not gonna teach you how to roller skate; and that’s when I realized OH MY GOD, I NEED PEOPLE!” And If that doesn’t speak directly to those of us who are loners and think we don’t need anyone… I honestly don’t know what does. Some honorary mentions off the album:

– BMO (Produced by Omen, Elite, Ron Gilmore & Galt MacDemort)
– Speak To Me (Produced by Elite & Ron GIlmore)
– New Apartment (Produced by DJ Grumble & Elite)
– Facetime (Produced by Graig Brockman & J.Cole)

A LOT. 21 SAVAGE FT. J.COLE.

Written by Tina Rateau (@blue_spiritu)

These past few days, 21 Savage has been through ‘A LOT’ to say the least. On his record ‘A Lot’ Savage teams up with J. Cole to deliver a reflective track (produced by J. White Did it & DJ Dahi) which he has paired with remarkable visuals. First things first, we absolutely MUST acknowledge the skill in the production of this track. The producers have tastefully paired drums with a sample from East Underground’s ‘I Love you’.

Savage reflects on his past, from the hardships of growing up in Atlanta to the pain of losing numerous friends and suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. He later (in the extended version) speaks of current events such as the water crisis in Flint, Michigan and the mistreatment of migrants at the US-Mexico border.

One of the highlights of this track is definitely J. Cole’s appearance [and homeboy had A LOT to say]. Cole spoke of the current state of the music industry (I personally found the faking streams phenomena quite intriguing), his career and current names both in hip hop and basketball.
