FIRST LOOK 2 GALA SHOW : BY JILL

Well we were led to expect a collection full of optical patterns from BY JILL, yet what was delivered veered violently off that tangent. It looks like inspiration struck at an 11th hour, as the actual collection that hit the runway was a 40’s looking gal inspired by her own tastes. A blue palette dominated the 13 looks paraded down the runway with linen, sheers, and ragged cotton patchwork decoratifs. Floral lace could be seen to excess on near all pieces and an emphasis for BY JILL was placed on head wear this season.

FIRST LOOK 2 GALA SHOW : MAHKA SHOP SELECTS

MAHKA the active select shop in Sheung Wan presented a stylish, feminine grouping of the various brands they carry at present. Mixing perfectly with their own namesake brand were the lace dresses of BOAIME, and Cashew, and the accessories of La Fiancee du Facteur. BOAIME and Cashew are both Vietnamese brands with extensive dress collections, and it was nice to see them present a more delicate selection on the FIRST LOOK 2 runway. Colorful and light the women’s pieces were stunning on the models and clearly flattered the figure. The menswear pieces by Mahka exclusively also showed their label growth from t-shirts to a more cut and sew aesthetic and bold use of print. Pay attention as MAHKA continues to grow!

FIRST LOOK 2 GALA SHOW : LUKE CHAN

Great to see Hong Kong designer Luke Chan’s collection continue to grow and mature. Presenting for the second straight season with FIRST LOOK, Luke continues to find inspiration from Edwardian England. For his FW18 collection, he used a very flat color tone which was very interesting upon closer inspection. British overcast greys made for all over looks, as well a surprising military green that may have almost gone unnoticed by those in attendance. Accessories were also prominent from flat point shoes, to a large brimmed hat for the final exit look. Particularly appreciated the subtle sportswear theme incorporated into this season’s collection. Looks 6 and 8 were the ones for me! Onwards and upwards Luke Chan.

ESTEBAN CORTAZAR FW17 WOMENS

My gut tells me that me and Esteban collide one in a blue moon. Taste I mean. That blue moon has arrived this season. Besides hoping the first piece is not real fur, I dig the clash all over here. The piece in white is a surprise, a respite from the rest of the collection which is a goulash of patterns and fabrics. Enjoyable though with the whimsical cuttings to the sportswear an extra plus!

EDELINE LEE FW17 WOMENS

Hannah Höch is a Dada artist. Hannah Höch’s creations had a strong influence on this collection from Edeline Lee. Edeline Lee is based in London, and I want to bet the smart money she is Korean. As true to a Dada artist some pieces are rather wild and whimsical here. I like how Edeline has paired it down to a cohesive statement and these three pieces do it best! We look forward to more.
